Dependence is a condition in which the body adapts to continuous drug use, making the substance necessary to maintain normal physiological or psychological function. When the drug is reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, sweating, tremors, or more severe reactions may occur. It can be physical, where the body relies on the drug to function, or psychological, where there is an emotional or mental craving for the substance.

Definition:

  • It is a state where the body has adapted to the presence of a drug, and withdrawal symptoms occur if the drug is stopped.

Types of Dependence:

  1. Physical:

    • Withdrawal symptoms are physical (e.g., tremors, seizures).
    • Example: Withdrawal from alcohol or opioids.
  2. Psychological:

    • Characterized by craving and emotional distress without the drug.
    • Example: Cocaine, cannabis.

Important Note:

  • Dependence does not always mean addiction, though the two often coexist.
