Filter aids & filter medias

Filter Aids

  • Filter aids are materials added to the fluid to improve the filtration process.
  • They can prevent clogging, improve flow rates, and enhance the clarity of the filtrate.
  • Common filter aids include:
  1. Diatomaceous Earth: Made from fossilized remains of diatoms, used in fine filtration.
  2. Perlite: A volcanic glass material that expands and is used as a filter aid.
  3. Cellulose: Used for its fibrous structure to improve filtration.
  4. Activated Carbon: Used for adsorptive filtration to remove dissolved impurities.

Filter Media

  • The filter medium is the material through which the fluid passes during filtration.
  • Different types of filter media include:
  1. Cloth Filters: Made from natural or synthetic fibers, used in various industrial applications.
  2. Paper Filters: Commonly used for laboratory filtrations, like filter papers.
  3. Membrane Filters: Used for precise filtration, available in various pore sizes for microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration.
  4. Sand Filters: Common in water treatment processes, using layers of graded sand.
  5. Ceramic Filters: Used for high-temperature and chemical-resistant applications.
  6. Metal Filters: Made from woven or sintered metal, used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
