Properties of Tannins & Its Identification Test

  • Water-soluble and astringent in taste.
  • Forms complexes with proteins, alkaloids, and metals.
  • Have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Tests for Identification:

  1. Ferric Chloride Test:

    • Reagent: 5
    • Positive Result: Blue-black or green color indicates tannins.
  2. Gelatin Test:

    • Reagent: Gelatin solution.
    • Positive Result: White precipitate
  3. Goldbeater’s Skin Test:

    • Reagent: Goldbeater’s skin (ox intestine) + HCl.
    • Positive Result: Brownish-black color.
