Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Treats a wide range of infections, including sexually transmitted infections, skin infections, and respiratory infections. Also used as a malaria prophylaxis.

Side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, photosensitivity, tooth discoloration in children, and potential toxicity in pregnancy.

Example:

  • Vibramycin is a well-known brand of doxycycline.
