Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Treats a wide variety of bacterial infections, including acne.

Side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, photosensitivity, tooth discoloration, and potential toxicity in pregnancy. Also can cause vestibular disturbances and autoimmune problems.

Example:

  • Minocin is a well-known brand of minocycline.
