Biomolecules and Bioenergetics – Summary

This unit provides a comprehensive overview of biomolecules and bioenergetics, laying the foundation for understanding biochemical processes essential to life. It begins with an introduction to biomolecules, which are classified into carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, amino acids, and proteins. Each group is explained in terms of its chemical nature, structural components, and biological functions, such as energy storage, genetic information transfer, enzyme activity, and cellular structure.

Carbohydrates serve as the body’s primary energy source, lipids play a role in membrane structure and energy storage, proteins function as enzymes and structural components, while nucleic acids like DNA and RNA are vital for genetic information and protein synthesis.

The second part of the unit focuses on bioenergetics, the study of energy flow in biological systems. It introduces the concept of free energy and distinguishes between endergonic and exergonic reactions. The relationship between free energy, enthalpy, and entropy is discussed, along with the importance of redox potential in metabolic pathways.

Furthermore, the unit explores energy-rich compounds, emphasizing the biological significance of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) as the universal energy currency, and cyclic AMP, a key signaling molecule.

At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes semester that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
