Enzymes and Coenzymes – Summary

Unit V provides a detailed overview, which are essential biological catalysts involved in nearly all biochemical reactions. The unit begins with an introduction to enzymes, discussing their properties, nomenclature, and the IUB classification system, which categorizes enzymes based on the types of reactions they catalyze.

It then explores enzyme kinetics, focusing on the Michaelis-Menten equation and the Lineweaver-Burk plot, which help in understanding enzyme activity and substrate interaction. The unit also discusses various enzyme inhibitors with examples, explaining how they affect enzyme function and how inhibition can be reversible or irreversible.

Furthermore, it covers enzyme regulation, including enzyme induction and repression, and the role of allosteric, which are regulated by molecules binding at sites other than the active site. These mechanisms are crucial for maintaining metabolic balance in the body.

The therapeutic and diagnostic applications of isoenzymes are also highlighted, showcasing their importance in clinical medicine—for example, in diagnosing heart or liver conditions.

At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes semester that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
