Unit II Summary: States of Matter and Physicochemical Properties

This Unit explores the states of matter and their relevance to pharmaceutical science. It covers the changes in the state of matter, such as melting, vaporization, and sublimation, along with concepts like latent heat, vapor pressure, critical point, and eutectic mixtures. The unit also introduces gaseous states, including the formulation and application of aerosols and inhalers, as well as relative humidity, which plays a vital role in drug stability.

Various types of liquid systems are discussed, such as liquid complexes, liquid crystals, and glassy states, highlighting their physical behavior and pharmaceutical significance. The unit further classifies solids into crystalline, amorphous, and those exhibiting polymorphism, which can affect drug solubility and bioavailability.

The second part of the unit focuses on key physicochemical properties of drug molecules, including refractive index, optical rotation, dielectric constant, dipole moment, and dissociation constant. It also describes methods for their determination and applications, particularly in drug formulation, stability, and interaction prediction

At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
