Plant Tissue Culture – Summary

Unit III explores the fundamentals and applications of plant culture, a vital technique in pharmacognosy and biotechnology. It begins with the historical development of the method, showing how it has evolved into a modern tool for plant-based research and production.

The unit explains various types of cultures, including callus, suspension, and organ cultures, each used for different objectives like mass propagation or metabolite extraction. It also outlines the nutritional and environmental requirements for successful growth, such as nutrients, vitamins, growth regulators, and controlled lab conditions.

Furthermore, the applications of tissue culture in pharmacognosy are highlighted, such as the micropropagation of medicinal plants, enhancement of bioactive compound production, and genetic improvement for disease resistance.

Importantly, the unit introduces edible vaccines, where plants are engineered to produce vaccine proteins, offering an innovative, low-cost immunization strategy. Overall, this unit emphasizes the significance of tissue culture in advancing medicinal plant research and pharmaceutical development.

At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
