UNIT–IV: Antifungal, Anti-protozoal, Anthelmintic Agents & Sulfonamides Notes
1. Antifungal Agents
- Antifungal Antibiotics:
- Amphotericin-B, Nystatin, Natamycin, Griseofulvin: Disrupt fungal cell membrane or mitosis.
- Synthetic Antifungals:
- Azoles: Clotrimazole, Econazole, Miconazole, Ketoconazole, Fluconazole, Itraconazole, etc.
- Others: Naftifine HCl, Tolnaftate: Used topically for dermatophytes.
2. Anti-protozoal Agents
- Treat amoebiasis, trichomoniasis, and leishmaniasis.
- Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Ornidazole: Nitroimidazoles.
- Others: Diloxanide, Iodoquinol, Pentamidine, Atovaquone, Eflornithine.
3. Anthelmintics
- Used against intestinal and systemic helminths.
- Diethylcarbamazine, Mebendazole, Albendazole, Ivermectin, Niclosamide, Praziquantel.
4. Sulfonamides and Sulfones
- Historical Background & SAR: First antimicrobial class; mimic PABA to inhibit folate synthesis.
- Examples:
- Sulfamethizole, Sulfisoxazole, Sulfamethoxazole, Sulphadiazine, Sulphacetamide, Sulfasalazine.
- Folate Reductase Inhibitors:
- Trimethoprim, Cotrimoxazole (synergistic combination).
- Sulfones:
- Dapsone: Used in leprosy and dermatitis herpetiformis
