Coating Materials

  • Coating Materials
  • Film Coating Materials: Include polymers like HPMC, plasticizers, and colorants.
  • Enteric Coating Materials: Contain cellulose acetate phthalate or methacrylic acid polymers for delayed release.
  •  It contains pigments and opacifiers to improve tablet appearance and protect light-sensitive drugs.
  1. Film-Forming Polymers

    • Cellulose derivatives: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), ethylcellulose, cellulose acetate.
    • Methacrylic polymers: Eudragit series.
    • Enteric polymers: Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), polyvinyl acetate phthalate (PVAP), HPMCP.
  2. Plasticizers

    • Enhance film flexibility, reduce brittleness.
    • Examples: Glycerin, propylene glycol, triethyl citrate.
  3. Colorants & Opacifiers

    • Provide aesthetic appearance, identification, or protect from light.
    • Examples: Titanium dioxide (opacifier), iron oxides (pigments).
  4. Solvents

    • Organic solvents: Acetone, ethanol, isopropanol (less preferred due to toxicity, flammability, environmental concerns).
    • Aqueous systems: Water-based dispersions or solutions.
