Mechanism of Desflurane:
- Similar to isoflurane
- Rapid onset/recovery due to low blood solubility
Uses of Desflurane:
- Outpatient surgery (day-case anesthesia)
- Maintenance (not ideal for induction)
Side Effects:
- Airway irritation, coughing, laryngospasm
- Tachycardia, hypertension (initial)
- Least metabolized = minimal organ toxicity
Notes:
- Requires special heated vaporizer
- Rapid changes in depth of anesthesia possible
