Uses of Desflurane:

  • Outpatient surgery (day-case anesthesia)
  • Maintenance (not ideal for induction)

Side Effects:

  • Airway irritation, coughing, laryngospasm
  • Tachycardia, hypertension (initial)
  • Least metabolized = minimal organ toxicity

Notes:

  • Requires special heated vaporizer
  • Rapid changes in depth of anesthesia possible
