Definition of Drug Abuse:

Characteristics:
- Use outside of medical supervision
- Taking higher doses than prescribed
- Using illicit drugs
- Often the first step toward addiction
Examples:
- Using opioids for euphoria
- Using stimulants to stay awake
- Recreational use of marijuana
- Taking sedatives to induce sleep without medical need
- Note: Not everyone who abuses a drug becomes addicted, but it increases the risk of addiction.
