Glaucoma is an eye disorder marked by increased intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss.
- A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often related to high intraocular pressure (IOP).
Types of Glaucoma:
- Open-angle glaucoma (most common, chronic)
- Angle-closure glaucoma (sudden, emergency)
- Normal-tension glaucoma
Symptoms of Glaucoma:
- Often asymptomatic in early stages
- Gradual vision loss (peripheral first)
- Acute angle-closure: eye pain, blurred vision, headache, nausea
Treatment:
- Eye drops to lower IOP (e.g., beta-blockers, prostaglandin analogs)
- Laser therapy
- Surgery (e.g., trabeculectomy)
