Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disorder marked by increased intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss.

  • A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often related to high intraocular pressure (IOP).

Types of Glaucoma:

  • Open-angle glaucoma (most common, chronic)
  • Angle-closure glaucoma (sudden, emergency)
  • Normal-tension glaucoma

Symptoms of Glaucoma:

  • Often asymptomatic in early stages
  • Gradual vision loss (peripheral first)
  • Acute angle-closure: eye pain, blurred vision, headache, nausea

Treatment:

  • Eye drops to lower IOP (e.g., beta-blockers, prostaglandin analogs)
  • Laser therapy
  • Surgery (e.g., trabeculectomy)
