Constitution:
- The Central Government constitutes the PCI under Section 3 of the Act.
- Members include:
- President and Vice President (elected by the members of the Council).
- Six members elected by the State Pharmacy Councils.
- Six members (at least) nominated by the Central Government, including representatives from medical and pharmaceutical faculties.
- One member representing the University Grants Commission (UGC).
- One member representing the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Functions of Pharmacy Council of India:
- Education Regulations: Formulate and prescribe minimum standards for pharmacy education (diploma/degree) across India.
- Recognition of Qualifications: Approve courses of study and examinations that lead to recognized pharmacy qualifications.
- Inspection: Inspect institutions offering pharmacy courses to verify if they meet the required standards.
- Maintenance of the Central Register: Keep a central register of pharmacists, which compiles details from all state registers.
