Relative Humidity

Definition of Relative Humidity:

  • It is the ratio of the current amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature, expressed as a percentage.

Formula of Relative Humidity:

RH = (Actual Vapor Pressure / Saturation Vapor Pressure) × 100

Importance:

  1. Weather Forecasting: RH is a key parameter in meteorology for predicting fog, dew, and precipitation.
  2. Agriculture: Influences plant transpiration and irrigation needs.
  3. Everyday Life: Affects indoor air quality and comfort levels in homes and workplaces.

Measurement:

  • Hygrometers are used to measure RH.

Example:

  • If the air temperature is 30°C and the air contains half the amount of water vapor it can hold at that temperature, the relative humidity is 50
