Two-Compartment Open Model

Two-Compartment Open Model

  • The two-compartment open model is a pharmacokinetic model used to describe how drugs distribute and eliminate within the body.
  • This model divides the body into two theoretical compartments:
  1. Central Compartment

    • Represents the blood and highly perfused organs (e.g., heart, liver, kidneys).
    • Site of drug administration and elimination.
  2. Peripheral Compartment

    • Represents less perfused tissues (e.g., muscle, fat).
    • Drug exchanges with the central compartment but is not a site of elimination.

Key Assumptions

  • Drug distribution between compartments is rapid and reversible.
  • Drug elimination occurs only from the central compartment.
