Preparation of Zinc Sulphate:
- It can be prepared by reacting zinc metal, zinc oxide, or zinc carbonate with sulfuric acid:
- Using zinc metal: Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2
- Using zinc oxide: ZnO + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2O
- Using zinc carbonate: ZnCO3 + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + CO2 + H2O
Properties of Zinc Sulphate:
- A white, odorless, crystalline powder.
- Soluble in water.
- Commonly found as a heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O), known as white vitriol.
Uses
- Astringent: Used in lotions, eye drops, and creams.
