Unit II Summary: Anti-Anginal, Diuretics, and Anti-Hypertensives

This unit explains medicines used in heart-related problems. To begin with, anti-anginal drugs help reduce chest pain. For example, vasodilators like Nitroglycerin*, Isosorbide dinitrate*, and Dipyridamole increase blood flow to the heart. Similarly, calcium channel blockers such as Amlodipine, Verapamil, and Diltiazem relax the heart muscles and lower blood pressure.

Next, letโ€™s look at diuretics, which help remove extra water and salt from the body. There are different types. Firstly, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like Acetazolamide* reduce fluid in the body. Secondly, thiazide diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide lower blood pressure effectively. Thirdly, loop diuretics like Furosemide* act fast and are used in emergencies. In contrast, potassium-sparing diuretics like Spironolactone help keep potassium in the body. Finally, osmotic diuretics like Mannitol are used to treat brain swelling.

After that, the unit discusses anti-hypertensive drugs. These are used to manage high blood pressure. Examples include beta-blockers like Timolol, ACE inhibitors like Captopril and Enalapril, and central-acting drugs such as Clonidine* and Methyldopa. Furthermore, vasodilators like Minoxidil and Sodium nitroprusside help relax blood vessels.
